Should red meat be taxed?

Is red meat bad for us and our planet?

According to the World Health Organisation, processed foods like sausages and bacon cause cancer. Red meat has been linked to heart disease, strokes and diabetes. Cattle also use precious resources for feed and produce the greenhouse gas methane.

Now new research suggests red meat should be taxed to discourage its consumption and help pay for the health problems it is believed to cause. Governments already tax products like sugar, alcohol and tobacco in an effort to stop people buying them.

Dr Marco Springmann from Oxford University is the man behind the latest research suggesting red meat should be added to that list.
