US charges 'billion dollar whale' and ex-Goldman bankers
The long-running scandal surrounding Malaysia's state development fund 1MDB has gripped the country for years, leading to arrests and multi-million dollar asset seizures.
In the latest twist, the US Department of Justice has now brought criminal charges against two former Goldman Sachs bankers and Malaysian financier Jho Low. These are the first US criminal charges to surface in the scandal, which played a large role in the election defeat earlier this year of Malaysia's former prime minister, Najib Razak.
Bradley Hope, a journalist at the Wall Street Journal and co-author of the book about the 1MDB scandal called "Billion Dollar Whale" provided more details.
