ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Minute: On whether mocking white people can be racist
The New York Times, one of the worldβs most famous newspapers, has resisted calls to fire a new member of its editorial board, after some people reacted angrily when a few of her old tweets were shared.
Sarah Jeong, a tech and legal journalist, had posted several messages mocking white people back in 2014, in one case joking that she hopes theyβll become extinct. She has responded that these messages were posted in reaction to racist, misogynist abuse she had received herself.
The New York Times says it was aware of Sarah Jeongβs social media history prior to hiring her, and that being a young, Asian woman βmade her a subject of frequent online harassmentβ.
