Jean Sibelius: Symphony No 5 in E flat major (Prom 42)

Commissioned by the Finnish government to celebrate Sibelius' 50th birthday, Sibelius delivered the symphony on time, but then spent the next four years revising it.

Commissioned by the Finnish government to celebrate Sibelius' 50th birthday, Sibelius delivered the symphony on time, but then spent the next four years revising it. Along with his second symphony this is the most popular of Sibelius's syphonies. Inspiration for the symphony comes from nature; the horns in the final movement sound like the calls of swans, referencing Sibelius's memory of 16 swans in flight.
