Maurice Ravel: Piano Concerto for the Left Hand (Prom 28)

Ravel’s brooding Concerto for the Left Hand was commissioned by a pianist who lost an arm in the First World War.

Ravel’s brooding Concerto for the Left Hand was commissioned by the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during World War I.

Ravel created a virtuosic single movement work which emerges from the sombre depths of the orchestral to grow into a powerful statement of triumph over adversity.
