Windrush scandal: Coronation Street star's plea for action

Coronation Street star Rhea Bailey looks into the problems faced by some of the Windrush generation.

Rhea Bailey is best known for playing Caz Hammond in Coronation Street and PC Mel Ryder in The Bill.

Her dad came to the UK from the Caribbean island of St Kitts in the 1960s where he met her mum who is from Leeds.

For 5 live she’s been looking into the problems faced by some of the members of the so-called β€˜Windrush generation’ who haven’t been able to prove they have the right to stay in the UK, and makes an impassioned plea for the Government to act.

A ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Office spokesperson said: "The ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Secretary has apologised unreservedly for the distress caused to people of the Windrush generation. These are people who have contributed to the UK over a number of decades and it is our priority to ensure that those who have struggled to demonstrate their right to be here are supported to do so.

β€œIt is right we design a compensation scheme that effectively addresses the issues people of the Windrush generation have faced and to do that we have to listen. We have completed the call for evidence, which has given individuals and community groups the opportunity to share their stories and experiences.”

They added that since the time of recording, Joseph Bravo - who features in the clip above - has been naturalised as a British Citizen and will receive his certificate of naturalisation very shortly.
