Ten Pieces - Creative response - The National Children's Orchestra
Performers from the National Children's Orchestra respond to No Place Like.
"No Place like NCO was created in 3 days by the children of our Under 13βs orchestra, working with with the composer John Webb and our NCO instrumental tutors. The starting point was what it feels like to be a member of NCO. "
"The piece has four sections - the first is the dream of being in NCO which is a slow, reflective movement with harps and individual solos from across the orchestra. We then move into the audition process and how that feels - the ideas the children shared were sweaty palms, racing hearts and nervous anticipation, which they translated into a tense atonal section of music - you can hear a heart beat starting on the contra bassoon and moving throughout the orchestra. The third part starts at the arrival at a course when we make new friends and find our place, which musically translated into question and answer solos as our musicians start to build new friendships. And the final section of the piece represents the journey to the concert - it starts very quietly on the double basses and then gradually adds more and more instruments as we build a musical texture to represent the achievement in our final concert. It has a really fun, upbeat feeling and we end on a high - always!"
"The children introduced "No Place like NCO" in our performance and in four words they described it as βdiverse, creative, fun and exciting.β What more do we need to say!"
