"Huge efforts" are made to avoid military confrontation and the West should keep lines of communication with Russia open, the former chief of MI6, John Sawers, told the Today programme.
He also said he "does not approve of what President Trump is doing" by tweeting messages but that there should be a "firm" response to Russia.
