An 'Electric Chair Changed My Life' Desert Island Disco

Vicci Jones reminisces about happy days dancing at the Electric Chair in Manchester. The tunes include Sly Mongoose, Roy Davis Jr. and THAT Larry Levan mix of the Joubert Singers.

A heavily pregnant Vicci Jones shares the tunes that still get her dancing (until 1am, just last weekend, it eased her back pain!)

These tunes remind her of the monthly Electric Chair club night, in Manchester. She says: β€œI finished 6th form in 2004 and my mates headed off to university but I decided against it at the eleventh hour. On the last Saturday of each month, they’d all come back to Manchester for an amazing club night called Electric Chair and I loved meeting up with them.

As the months went on, people made it back less regularly but I didn’t miss my monthly Electric fix because my sister had finished university and, once once I’d introduced her, she was my new clubbing buddy. My mum used to drop us off and, on the drive into town, we’d sing Strings Of Life (which is particularly easy because it has no words...duh duh duh duh duh). If we were really lucky, mum would pick us up too!

I had noticed that one of the regular DJs (Justin Crawford) was always snapping pictures so I went to the website to have a look. Whilst there, I wandered onto the chat forum and began some of my most enduring friendships. The first time my sister couldn’t come out and the lads weren’t back from uni, I made the decision to go it alone. The crowd were so friendly and I knew a few of the regulars/forum folk would be there so I had no qualms about turning up by myself. Everyone was there for the music - no posers, not there β€œto be seen”, not going specifically on the pull (no doubt that plenty of this happened though) and people weren’t dressed to impress; they were dressed to dance.

Through this wonderful group of people I met my (now) husband. Our wedding in 2012 and one of our friends (Disco Ben) was our DJ. I invited a lot of mates from Electric Chair and our dance floor turned into that old club scene, it was incredible.

Sadly the regular club night stopped in 2008 (after 13 years) and the venue was turned into a Tesco Metro. They’ve had one-off nights since then, so I get along to as many as I can (depending on babysitting credits) and still catch up with lots of the old crowd.
