Musician Kika Materula says it’s exactly the same with classical music. She runs Xiquisti, a project to set up Mozambique’s first youth symphony orchestra. With nearly half the country’s population under the age of 15, providing education and training opportunities are sorely needed. Violinist Jessica Nhantumbo dreams of being a professional orchestral musician, as the Â鶹ԼÅÄ’s Stephen Ryan discovered in Maputo.
