Primary school children in the Chinese district of Shunqing were left bewildered by a seemingly unsolvable exam question.

Students attempted various answers but one simply gave up saying: "The captain's age is... I don't know. I can't solve this."

Education authorities said it was to test the 'critical awareness' of the students.
