The story of the Hurricane
25 years later, Mike and Steve revisit the tragic life of Rubin βHurricaneβ Carter.
Rubin Carter was a contender for the world middleweight title when in 1966 he was arrested, tried and eventually convicted of a triple murder in Paterson, New Jersey β despite evidence suggesting he was innocent. Carter gained worldwide fame in 1975 when Bob Dylan released his song βHurricaneβ based on the case. He spent 20 years in prison before the conviction was overturned, and devoted the rest of his life to helping those wrongly accused of crimes.
Carter died in 2014, but back in 1993, Mike Costello went to meet him and told his story in an award-winning documentary called βAn Innocent Man In A Living Hellβ. Mike and Steve revisit that documentary and share their stories of meeting Rubin Carter. Then, the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ World Serviceβs Steve Crossman joins the podcast to talk about an upcoming podcast series about Carterβs life.
