The sea rangers who safeguard the Great Barrier Reef

The Indigenous Sea Rangers are a group of working with the Queensland government to help monitor and protect the Queensland coast, including Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Many of the rangers are traditional owners of the land they manage, and they view the sea as just as precious and important as the land – calling it their β€˜Sea Country’. The idea of the ranger programme is to involve the Aboriginal people in the management of what is traditionally their land.
