The most political theatre in the Soviet Union

Tom Service visits Moscow's radical Taganka Theatre, founded by visionary director Yuri Lyubimov.

Born in 1917, the year of the Bolshevik Revolution, Lyubimov was at the forefront of a wave of avant-garde revolutionary art - from a 1971 Hamlet that saw the lead actor appear on stage in jeans and carrying a guitar, to the legendary 1977 production of The Master and Margarita.

This is the sixth of Ten Icons of a Russian Century, part of the Radio 3 season Breaking Free: A Century of Russian Culture.
