Tamanya says: I love how emotive both these women are. With a history that mirrors current ongoing civil unrest, Jan embodies an inspiring, self-assured role model that any young girl would be proud of. Ama’s points echoes situations that I have personally had. I instantly recalled debates with my friends and family on these topics. I felt I could genuinely add to the discussion, as if sat alongside the two. I believe that this conversation has cultural and political importance among those of representation, equality and acceptance of difference.
Jan and Ama have healthy and respectful discussion, despite the difference of their viewpoints; one that resonates with everyone from all walks of life. The conversation is cathartic to listen to and is clearly beneficial to both participates. I wanted to highlight these positive aspects as well as the additional layer of a relatable topic. Ama doesn’t want to be a book judged by its cover, with the assumptions that comes with it. As Jan was inspired by a past photograph, the idea of a photo album full of memories uncovered symbolized digging deep to internal thoughts and reflecting on formative moments.
Jan is proud of the story that her hair tells and the sense of community she has built along the way.
Referencing to crowns and blooming flowers was an influence taken from the cultural link of hair and outward displays of inner beauty and regality. flowers, which are given as displays of affection, are used to show that Jan values and cherishes the compliments she receives, letting them grow around her.
