Kurds in Crisis
The Kurdish Regional Government in northern Iraq is in crisis - this week a referendum showed massive public support for breaking away from Iraq, but the government in Baghdad declared it illegitimate and now a series of measures by them and their regional allies, Turkey and Iran, are threatening the KRG's economy. The borders have been closed, all flights in and out are being suspended from Friday; Turkey has told its citizens to leave. The crisis risks crushing what has become a highly-successful economy inside a de facto independent part of Iraq. Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and British Airways all have regular direct flights to Erbil and there has been substantial foreign direct investment in the KRG.
