How much did Pleat focus on defending at Tottenham?

David Pleat explains how much he focused on defending when he managed Tottenham during the 1986/87 season.

Pleat's side were known for their attacking football, with this in mind Mark Chapman asked how much they focused on the defence at the time.

The former Tottenham manager said: "Well when I read people's recollections of it it suggests that I didn't pay too much attention to defence, I think that's slightly unfair."

"I just believe that if your players are good enough they have a good idea of how to defend and when they win the ball, how they attack.

"I go back to Brian Clough...he said to his defenders: 'If you can't handle your immediate opponent you're not good enough for me.'"

Pleat was discussing defence after recent questions over Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool's recent defensive performances.
