Butcher: Southgate has not got any gifted players
Former England defender Terry Butcher says the national side are short of quality in midfield. Speaking after Gareth Southgate's side beat Malta 4-0, Butcher said England lacked anyone who was 'gifted' or able to 'unlock defences'.
"Is this England team hard to beat? No. Is this England team going to pass you off the pitch? No. Is this England team going to work hard? Yes. When it comes to something special, something gifted and something that’s going to unlock defences when it comes to the World Cup, we haven’t quite got that."
Butcher also says that after nine months in charge, Southgate should have a better idea of his best 11: "He hasn’t got the blend of his team right, he hasn’t got the shape of his team right and that requires work."
