The violent clashes in Charlottesville, which left one woman dead and many others injured, have intensified the debate about what to do about the the hundreds of statues and plaques commemorating Confederate leaders right across the United States. John Davidson is a conservative writer for the Federalist online magazine. He argues the outrage over the monuments is really about identity politics and has been magnified by the Democratic Party as a way to mobilise its base.
