Also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, it began on 31st July 1917 and lasted 100 days.

British general Douglas Haig wanted to get through German lines to reach Belgian ports to destroy German submarines.

It ended with the Allies only making five miles progress. 495,000 people died from both sides of the fighting.

Training took place on Salisbury Plain and mud and heavy rain were a feature for most of the battle
