'Sagan was unlucky. Cavendish was already heading to the barriers.'

Three-time Olympic medallist Rob Hayles says world champion Peter Sagan's punishment for clashing with rival Mark Cavendish in the Tour De France was "harsh".

Sagan – whose team have appealed against the decision - was disqualified from the race after clashing with Cavendish in the closing moments of stage four on Tuesday.

Cavendish later withdrew from the Tour with a broken shoulder blade.
