999: World's oldest emergency service turns 80
It was 80 years ago today that the world's first dedicated emergency number was launched in London. From handling 1,000 calls during its first week of operation, the service now takes up to 560,000 calls every 7 days. David Hay, Head of Heritage and Archives at British Telecom, told us why the 999 service was set up.
