Jim Telfer: From 'Grandad' to 'Monster' on '97 Lions tour

John Bentley recalls being told he "wouldn't want to get picked for the Lions" given the "punishing" nature of working under assistant coach Jim Telfer.

Former Scotland international Telfer was Sir Ian McGeechan's right hand man on the Lions tour to South Africa in 1997.

"The forwards went into a live scrum session and knocked the living daylights out of each other!" Bentley recalled.

Telfer's rousing 'Everest' speech to his pack prior to the first Test against the Springboks is revered as one of the most inspirational in sporting history.

Telfer also had a gentle, softly-spoken side off the field according to 'Living with the Lions' filmmaker Duncan Humphreys. "But he'd turn up and this monster would appear!" he added.
