ECJ: Vegan butter isn't butter
When is a dairy food not a dairy food? The answer - according to the European Court of Justice today - is: when it doesn't contain any dairy ingredients. It's ruled that dairy substitutes for vegetarians and vegans made of purely plant-based ingredients can no longer be labelled and sold in the EU using terms like milk, cheese or butter. There are some exceptions, like coconut milk. But generally, food firms will no longer be able to get away with using names like "veggie cheese" or "tofu butter" if they're just made from plants. Michael Oakes is a dairy farmer on the outskirts of Birmingham in the English midlands. As you might expect, he's rather pleased with the decision:
