Jamie Facer-Childs from Maidenhead was one of six Army Reserves who, unassisted by any kind of vehicle, battled temperatures of -50 C. They spent 67 days on the ice, with only skis to travel by.

He said:

"It's really odd to be somewhere where there's no actual features of land, there's only ice.

"So you get patches of deep snow which you have to drag the sledges through and bits of ice, nothing is smooth there and we encountered a bit of everything.

"I got messages from people back home saying can you get me a picture of a penguin but we didn't see anything because nothing can survive there."
