The Oxford Book Club - Alison Boulton - 24th January 2017
David is joined in the studio by journalist and author Alison Boulton, who has just met the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Thomas L Friedman. Alison reviews his new book Thank you for Being Late - an optimist's guide to thriving in in the age of accelerations. It explores the way our lives are speeding up at a dizzying pace, because of changes in technology, globalisation and climate change. It asks "what do we do" and "where should we stand in the hurricane"? Alison's second selection is Grandfathers by Ann Buchanan and Anna Rotkirch, nominated for British Academy Peter Townsend Prize for Social Policy and Sociology. It gives a global perspective on the overlooked and underestimated carer. The Places In Between documents Rory Stewart's walk across Afghanistan - "a masterpiece of observation, compassion and courage".
