Elodie's Story, told by Michelle Keegan

This is Elodie's Story, told by Michelle Keegan.

β€œMy little sister, Ellie, she’s blind but she can still do lots and lots of stuff….” Finn, Elodie’s older brother, says.

When Elodie was born her eyes were very small and unfinished. When she was a few months old, one of her retina’s detached. Not long after, her other retina also detached. Michelle, Elodie’s mum explains, β€œwe were told that there would be a gradual deterioration of her sight and that she would lose all her vision eventually.”Elodie says, β€œI wish I could see like Finn… I could see more amazing things.”

Being blind for Elodie is not just about a loss of vision, it’s about loss of learning opportunities. It’s for this reason that Michelle is keen to find special ways of helping her daughter achieve independence.

Thanks to In Tune music workshops run by Open Arts NI, Elodie has gained so much confidence. The workshops are all about co-ordination, listening and turn taking which are helping to build Elodie’s independence. Elodie has since discovered her true passion; music.

Michelle says, β€œWhen I see her laughing and enjoying herself. I just think. We can do this.”
