Elodie's Story, told by Michelle Keegan
This is Elodie's Story, told by Michelle Keegan.
βMy little sister, Ellie, sheβs blind but she can still do lots and lots of stuffβ¦.β Finn, Elodieβs older brother, says.
When Elodie was born her eyes were very small and unfinished. When she was a few months old, one of her retinaβs detached. Not long after, her other retina also detached. Michelle, Elodieβs mum explains, βwe were told that there would be a gradual deterioration of her sight and that she would lose all her vision eventually.βElodie says, βI wish I could see like Finnβ¦ I could see more amazing things.β
Being blind for Elodie is not just about a loss of vision, itβs about loss of learning opportunities. Itβs for this reason that Michelle is keen to find special ways of helping her daughter achieve independence.
Thanks to In Tune music workshops run by Open Arts NI, Elodie has gained so much confidence. The workshops are all about co-ordination, listening and turn taking which are helping to build Elodieβs independence. Elodie has since discovered her true passion; music.
Michelle says, βWhen I see her laughing and enjoying herself. I just think. We can do this.β
