The Ark of Taste: Euskal Txerria Pig

Pello Urdapilleta (literally translating as Peter Pig-pile!) talks to Dan Saladino about the Euskal Txerria Pig, the only remaining pig breed which is native to the Basque region.

Until the early 20th century, every farm in the Basque Country would have a small group of pigs, which would then be taken to fairs and sold to merchants from all parts of Spain. There were three native pig breeds: the Baztanesa, the Chato Vitoriano β€” both now extinct β€” and the Euskal Txerria. The latter, a short legged and large floppy eared breed, was only saved in extremis thanks to the initiative of a French Basque farmer, Pierre Oteitza, and is now farmed by Pello Urdapilleta and his family.
