Pigs as pets

Jeremy is joined by miniature piglets and an adult micro pig. Would you get one as a pet?

Miniature pigs are becoming increasingly popular with people looking for an unusual pet. The tiny pigs - also known as micro pigs - are much smaller than your average pig.

Farmer Chris Murray loves them. He started breeding them because he wanted to move into the pet business having been in the food business. He says there are lots of reasons to keep pets as companions. He says they are friendly, they are great to cuddle, you can even train them to do tricks.

Chris and Jeremy field calls from Radio 2 listeners.

Janey Burney in Lincoln has 2 micro pigs - that are now 24 stone each. 'They were micro pigs. I paid a lot of money. Victoria Beckham had one so I wanted one. Seven years later they are 24 stone each.' Chris says Janey has been mis-sold a micro pig - 'it depends where she got them from.'

Elizabeth Hull in Kingswinford strongly disagrees with the concept that pigs make good pets. Chris responds that micro pigs helped a boy with Asperger's. Elizabeth disagrees: 'We have rehoming centres all across the country full with dogs and cats. Dogs are brilliant for any sort of problems with kids. We're going to start having rehoming centres for pigs. The little baby pig - well not baby pig - is the most popular pet being handed in. People no longer wanted them - the novelty wears off.'
