Do we pretend Rooney has to be in the Manchester United team?
New York Times football correspondent Rory Smith says Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney "isn't playing well enough to explain the status that he has to be in the team".
The 30-year-old has been ineffective in United's two recent defeats by Manchester City and Watford.
Smith says: "I find it odd there are so many ways to pretend Wayne Rooney has to be in the Manchester United team.
"Why on earth would you play Wayne Rooney in midfield if you have specialist midfielders who have been midfielders for 20 years, just because Wayne Rooney could, theoretically, be quite good as a midfielder?" he added.
