'We've been neglected for 28 years in Washington'

David Render is an ex-engineer who decided to try and clean up his local area after becoming fed up with the neglect and rubbish everywhere. With a group of volunteers, he started by clearing away the overgrowth surrounding a sculpture that had been neglected for 28 years, even restoring and repainting it.

David then replaced the rotten and broken wood on picnic benches in the local Princess Anne park with new timber and screws, only to receive an email and letter from Sunderland City Council threatening him with legal action if he did anything else. The council claimed he had stolen the benches from the park without their consent. David explains to Jeremy Vine how he felt annoyed receiving the letter and why it drove him to dump a bag of rubbish at the city council.
