James Chan: Litany
James Chan is an 18-year-old composer from Hong Kong. James was born in Hong Kong and has been educated in the UK since 2011, beginning to compose as part of his GCSE course. Having studied much 20th- and 21st-century repertoire, including Stravinsky and Ives, his main influences include the dark, elemental sound-world of Sir Harrison Birtwistle and the more sensual and delicate music of Dutilleux. He hopes to continue his studies in composition at the University of Manchester and Royal Northern College of Music.
In 2016, James was selected from hundreds of entrants as one of the winners in the Senior Category of the annual ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Proms Inspire Competition. His winning piece, Litany for two pianos, was performed by Aurora Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Collon, at a Proms Extra event at the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔβs Radio Theatre on 15 August 2016.
