Subverting a Mexican stereotype on Instagram
The mariachi musician is one of Mexico's iconic characters. With his traditional costume and wide brimmed hat, he is instantly recognisable. Or is he? What if the mariachi is speaking French or Arabic? What if he is sampling Dutch cheese or playing cricket in Cambridge, England? Karim Hauser, a Mexican-Egyptian resident of Madrid, poses these questions with his Instagram account, 'Mariachi in transit' in which he places himself as a mariachi in incongruous settings. He's been talking to Dan Damon about the project.
