Row over call for city centre begging exclusion zone
Calls for begging-free zones in Belfast city centre. And claims that begging in the heart of the city is out of control.
Is it time for Belfast to introduce an anti begging exclusion zone? That's what's being suggested in today's Belfast Telegraph. The paper leads with a story claiming "PSNI officers on city centre beat warn vagrancy is out of control". It's claimed some beggars are making up to Β£170 a day. Exclusion or dispersal zones are used in other cities in the UK. In London it's used on a temporary basis to target begging, street gambling and rough sleeping.
