Rendition was 'totally counterproductive'

Ex-CIA officer Sabrina de Sousa says that the agency's extraordinary rendition programme damaged the image of the United States, without there being any clear evidence of its contribution to counterterrorism efforts.

Under the controversial programme, terrorist suspects were secretly transferred between countries for interrogation, allegedly including torture.

Sabrina de Sousa was stationed in Italy in the wake of 9/11 and described the collaboration between CIA officials and their foreign counterparts to detain and transfer suspects.

She is facing extradition to Italy after being found guilty of her alleged role in the rendition of Egyptian cleric Abu Omar in 2003. She denies involvement in the abduction and is calling for greater accountability at the higher levels of the organisations that sanctioned such detentions.
