Scotland, Benbecula: The Two Donalds
Nunton Cemetery, Benbecula - HS7 5LU
On 4 August 1916, Alastair Macleod in Benbecula was informed that his son Donald had died in France on July 23.
Alastair questioned whether this could be true, since his son Donald had written to him recently. When the coffin was opened, he was proved right. When the authorities were unable to trace any relatives in Lewis for the Donald Macleod who had died, Alastair arranged that the body in the coffin should be given a proper burial. But his true identity has remained a mystery until now.
Annella Macleod takes up the story.
