The official inquiry into the 2003 war, the Chilcot report, has been strongly critical of Tony Blair's government and UK military chiefs.
Sir John Chilcot's report, published on Wednesday, said Mr Blair had overstated the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, sent ill-prepared troops into battle and had "wholly inadequate" plans for the aftermath of the conflict.
So what are the lessons for future governments when considering any military action?
Victoria Derbyshire spoke to Lord West, who was head of the UK Navy during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Ben Bradshaw who was the deputy leader of the House Of Commons at the time Tony Blair took the country to war, Lord Butler, who in 2004 chaired the review of intelligence on weapons of mass destruction and Dr Lina Khatib, head of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House.
