Hollywood director George Cukor talks to John Baxter about his 50 years in the cinema.

Veteran Hollywood director George Cukor talks to John Baxter about his 50 years in the cinema.

At 82, Cukor has become the oldest man ever to direct a major film but his place in the history books was already assured with such classics as The Philadelphia Story, A Star is Born and My Fair Lady.

He talks about the many female stars he has directed from the formidable Ethel Barrymore, through Greta Garbo, Judy Garland and Katharine Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe, whom he once described as talented but insane.
