Russian maestro plays in Palmyra ruins

A Russian orchestra has staged a concert in the ruins of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, which was re-taken just a month ago from the Islamic State group, with the help of air-strikes ordered by Moscow.

The concert was broadcast live on Russian television from the Roman Theatre and was preceded by an address from the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, who said Palmyra had been liberated from terrorists.

The orchestra was led by the renowned conductor, Valery Gergiev who is a strong supporter of the Russian President.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's World Affairs Editor, John Simpson, was one of the few foreign journalists to see the concert and sent this report.
