On 12 June 2002, thousands of school children greeted Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh on the Golden Jubilee tour. This was the second day of the three day Welsh leg of the tour. The Queen arrived by steam train at the picturesque railway station of Dolau in Powys and unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Later, the Queen watched a whittling demonstration and listened to 2000 Powys school children singing folk songs, before taking a helicopter to Carmarthenshire. By the time she arrived, her schedule was running uncharacteristically late. Five thousand school children from across the county waited patiently for almost three hours, spread along several miles of the coastal path for the Queen to drive past them.

After opening the new lock and other improvements at Burry Port harbour, the royal party drove along the cycle path to Llanelli promenade where the Queen officially opened the new Millennium Coastal Park. After lunch, the Royal party visited Carmarthenshire Trade Fair at Llanelli's north dock.
