The Battle Against Bluetongue

The scientists and specialists laboratories searching for a cure

Susie Emmett reports on the battle against bluetongue - a non-contagious, insect-borne, viral disease of farm animals which, having conquered Africa, south Asia and the Middle East, is now invading Europe. With four of the world's specialists laboratories for animal diseases dedicated to bluetongue, will a cure be found?

"How it arrived in Europe, we just do not know, people talk about midges coming through with cut flowers from east Africa...and it only takes one insect to infect an animal." Chris Oura (Institute for Animal Health in the UK).
