Police Sickness

Sam Walker discusses the impact of working in the emergency services on mental health

This programme has discovered that the number of cases of police officers and staff taking long-term sick leave for psychological reasons has gone UP BY A THIRD over the past five years.

A Freedom of Information request found that, despite workforces shrinking, the number taking time off for stress related issues went up from just over 4, 500 in 2010 to more than six thousand in 2015. It also found a steady increase in overall long-term sick leave over the same period.
