Brian's Traditional Hot Cross Buns
If you put hot cross buns in your roof rafters they will expel bad spirits and stay fresh
Traditionally eaten at Easter!
Recipe:
Makes 12 Buns
Ingredients
500g Strong Plain Flour
325ml Milk
40g Butter
1 Egg
50g Sugar
7g I sachet dry fast acting yeast
70g Mixed Peel
1 finely chopped
Zest of an Orange
1 Tea Spoon Cinnamon
To Make the Cross;
50g Four
Water to form a sticky batter consistency
Glaze:
With melted apricot Jam or Icing Sugar & Water mixed together
Method:
Sieve the flour, add the yeast & Sugar. Make a well in centre. Bring the milk to the boil and add the butter.
Add the warm milk and butter to the flour mix and combine together.
Place on floured board and knead to form a smooth dough. Add dough into oiled bowl and cover with a tea towel. Place in a warm area and leave for approx. 1 hour until it doubles in size.
After and hour add to the dough the mixed peel, diced apple, orange zest and cinnamon. Mix in well then turn dough out onto floured board.
Shape dough like a sausage and divide into 3 parts. Then divide each part into 4 pieces.
Shape pieces into a ball and place on a baking tray lined with greased proof paper.
Cover with tea towel and place in same warm area as previous. Allow to double in size.
To make the cross simply add water to flour to form a sticky batter like consistency. Place batter in pipping bag and pipe a cross on each bun prior to baking.
Cook in preheated oven at 220Β°c for 20 minutes.
Warm some apricot jam and brush onto each bun then Enjoy !!
