Review of the year - 1993

The Uruguay round of world trade talks has concluded; the European Exchange Rate Mechanism effectively collapsed; economic chaos continued in Russia.

A look back at the main business headlines of 1993. The last 12 months saw the successful end of the Uruguay round of world trade talks, with farm produce, textiles, services, intellectual property and investment coming under international rules for the first time. Elsewhere, European currency markets had a turbulent year with the effective collapse of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, and Russia continued to experience economic chaos with President Yeltsin struggling to exert his authority.
