Getting lost during a pig hunt

Blindfolded I could find the way from my house to the supermarket. Turn left, walk for 500 metres and arrive at the very doorstep of my family’s source of protein. On a pig hunt with the Waorani I got lost. I realised instantly that on my own I stood little chance of finding my way back to the village.

Even without melodrama, being lost and alone in the rainforest is a dangerous predicament. For the Waorani, danger is part of life, from the environment to the animals they hunt. In the lost minutes in the forest I did reflect that at home our bacon doesn’t bite back.
