Breaking the Hippocratic Oath

Should doctors ever keep quiet about human rights abuses?

What happens when doctors witness human rights abuses? Traditionally, new doctors take a Hippocratic Oath where they swear to use their medical skills to benefit their patients. This programme investigates cases where medical staff have to decide between keeping quiet about abuse they see in order to continue helping patients or speaking out. Presenter Claudia Hammond asks experts, including Doctor Sophia Criskin from The Harvard School of Public Health in America: When should medical staff intervene?

Also on the show, the health risks facing Bangladesh after the floods in South East Asia; the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Expedition, where a group of doctors climb Mount Everest to find out how the body copes with low oxygen levels; how vinegar is being used to find cervical abnormalities; and a look at the skin-borrowing insects, sand fleas.
