What is a Fatwa for?

The fatwa is an increasingly popular way of resolving problems for Egypt's Sunni Muslims

The fatwa has become synonymous in the West with extremism. However, the fatwa is an increasingly popular way of resolving problems for Egypt's Sunni Muslims – so what exactly does a fatwa do, and who is it for?
Presenter Eva Dadrian explains the fatwa as a "religious ruling which offers Muslims a bridge between the principle of their faith, on the one hand, and everyday life on the other". Most, she says, have more to do with marital strife and what to wear than violence. She also looks at the growth in online fatwa websites.
