John Updike interviewed about his new novel, In the Beauty of the Lilies, which he calls "a sort of sly attempt to survey the American century" as it follows four generations from 1910 to 1990. Plus, a tribute to Arab-Israeli writer Emile Habibi, who has died at 74; Kay Redfield Jamison writes about manic depressive illness from the dual perspective of sufferer and professor of psychiatry in An Unquiet Mind; and Seamus Heaney's new collection of poems, The Spirit Level.
