The suffering of Russian Jews under the Nazis shocked Russian readers of Heavy Sand

Heavy Sand by Anatoly Rybakov is a novel about a Jewish family in the Ukraine, from the early 1900s until the end of World War Two. Now translated into English, its portrayal of the fate of Soviet Jews caused controversy when first published in 1978. Reviews of the exhibition Old and Modern Masters of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Wim Wenders season at the National Film Theatre, both in London. The winners of the Society of Authors awards include A.N Wilson, Julian Barnes and Clive Sinclair.
