Turkey promises more to stem refugee flow to Europe

But in return is the EU turning a blind eye to Ankara's crackdown on the media?

Discussions have been taking place among EU leaders in Brussels, where Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Ankara would take back all non-Syrian migrants and crack down harder on people smugglers. But it wants concessions in return, including quicker visa-free travel for its citizens. There are calls for Europe's leaders to strike a much harder bargain, and speak out against Ankara's increasingly authoritarian behaviour. The criticism has intensified after Turkish authorities seized control of the Zaman newspaper late on Friday. Journalists were physically removed from their building as police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of demonstrators. Over the weekend, police tightened security outside the Istanbul offices as the crowd continued to protest. One of them said seizure of the newspaper was "tyranny". Susannah Streeter spoke to the Financial Times's Editor in Istanbul, Mehul Srivastava, who said that the weekend takeover was expected.
